Indonesian Batik is the Most Exported to US, Germany

Jakarta – Deputy for Small and Medium Enterprises at the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, Hanung Harimba said the role of the private sector is needed in supporting Batik MSMEs starting from business management assistance, business marketing to partnerships.

"The Melokal dengan Batik campaign is very helpful for batik MSMEs in incubating, consulting on batik business development and developing local batik businesses on e-commerce platforms," Harimba said in a statement on Tuesday (April 30).

Harimba added that a conducive ecosystem in the digital market is needed. This is because batik has a significant contribution to Indonesia's exports.

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency, Indonesia's batik exports in 2023 reached US$17.5 million. This figure is not as big as before the pandemic.

However, this figure shows the enormous potential of the batik industry. Batik from Indonesia is mostly exported to the United States (74.75% share), Germany (3.61%), Singapore (3.23%), Malaysia (2.82%), and Canada (1.92%).

Head of Business Division of the Deputy for Micro Business of the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, Riesta Karentina, explained that 60 percent of the 64.5 million batik MSMEs fall into the micro category. 

These micro batik MSMEs need assistance to build an ecosystem so that they can develop further.

"There are two challenges for batik MSMEs, the first is the legality aspect and the second is managerial. The most common legality issues are intellectual rights and trademark cases, while the managerial issue is how micro MSMEs can be managed properly so that they can find their own market," Karentina concluded.
