First Medal for Indonesia at Paris Olympics as Shuttler Withdraws

Paris, VIVA – Indonesian women's singles badminton player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung successfully got bronze medal at the Paris Olympics after Spain's Carolina Marin decided to withdraw due to injury.

On Sunday, Gregoria was defeated by South Korea's An Se-young in the semifinals. She would have fought other semifinalists, either Carolina Marin or China's He Bingjiao.

Carolina, who withdrew from the competition, He Bingjiao automatically qualified for the final to fight with South Korea's An Se Young who defeated Indonesia's Gregoria in the semifinals.

On the other hand, the injury suffered by the 2016 Rio Olympics Champion did not seem to recover quickly. She was forced to withdraw from the bronze medal match.

That way, Gregoria, who is Carolina Marin's potential opponent in the bronze medal match on Monday, (August 5), automatically has made Gregoria got the bronze medal without playing.

Gregoria's bronze medal is Indonesia's first medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and also the first medal for the country's women's singles after Maria Kristin won bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
