Tackling Early Marriage through Education Activity in West Kalimantan

Kalimantan, VIVA – Child marriage remains a significant issue in Indonesia, where economic, cultural, and social factors often drive young people into marriage at an early age.
Concerned about the issue of early marriage, Nordianto, a young social activist from Kubu Raya, West Kalimantan, formed GenRengers Educamp.
It was regularly held as an alternative form of education, aimed at creating volunteers who are aware and knowledgeable about health issues, particularly early marriage and adolescent social behavior.

Through the GenRengers Educamp program, this young leader doesn’t simply discourage young people from marrying early.
Instead, he educated them on various topics, such as reproductive health, the dangers of unprotected sex, and the importance of financial independence in building a family.
Throughout 2016, GenRengers Educamp engaged 14 districts. The following year, this initiative successfully expanded to 10 more districts and five provinces beyond West Kalimantan, with similar programs replicating and adapting the GenRengers Educamp model.
By then, approximately 20 core volunteers had joined the main team of GenRengers Educamp.
Due to his dedication in raising awareness about the adverse effects of early marriage, Nordianto was honored with the SATU Indonesia Awards by Astra in 2018.
