Indonesia Opens Doors for Amazon Kuiper’s Satellite Internet Expansion

Jakarta, VIVA – The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemenkomdigi) has officially invited Amazon Kuiper, a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite project, to enter Indonesia.

This collaboration aims to expand digital connectivity in frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped (3T) regions while supporting digital transformation.

Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid emphasized that satellite technology plays a crucial role in addressing the digital divide.

“We welcome Amazon Kuiper’s commitment to supporting the expansion of digital connectivity in Indonesia. We are open to any investment and new technology that can help us achieve connectivity,” she said on Wednesday (March 19).

Amazon Kuiper is also in the process of applying for operational permits in Indonesia, including telecommunications licenses and satellite leasing rights, in accordance with the latest regulations that allow foreign companies to operate with a Business Identification Number (NIB).

“We understand that connectivity remains a challenge in many remote areas. Therefore, we are ready to collaborate with the government and local partners to provide broader internet access for the Indonesian people,” said Gonzalo de Dios, Global Head of Licensing and International Regulatory Affairs at Amazon Project Kuiper.

Then, the Minister of Communication and Digital added that the presence of this technology could support the development of the national digital ecosystem, including empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and enhancing e-government, e-health, and e-education services.

“We want to ensure that every citizen, regardless of their location, has equal access to digital technology. With investment and innovation support from the private sector, we can accelerate digital transformation and create greater opportunities for society,” the minister concluded.
