A leader with global experience, Prevost spent most of his career as a missionary in South America.

Most recently, he led the powerful Vatican office in charge of appointing bishops.

He is expected to continue the reforms initiated by Pope Francis.

Prevost spent a decade working in Trujillo, Peru, and was later appointed bishop of Chiclayo, another city in Peru, where he served from 2014 to 2023.

He also holds a Peruvian passport and became a Peruvian citizen in 2015. In an interview with Vatican Newsshortly after being named head of the Bishops’ Department, Prevost said he still considers himself a missionary.

“My calling, like that of every Christian, is to be a missionary — to proclaim the Gospel wherever one may be,” he said.
