Jakarta, VIVA – Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Anindya Bakrie, has commented regarding the layoff plans announced by Panasonic Holdings Corporation, which will affect employees globally.

He stated that the layoffs could have a negative impact on domestic industry and businesses.

Therefore, Bakrie assured that Kadin Indonesia, together with the government, will make efforts to boost job creation and nurture new entrepreneurs in the country.

“Workforce reduction can happen due to economic factors or technological disruption. But Kadin believes that economic growth can gradually return to 5–8 percent,” Bakrie said on Tuesday (May 13)

He then emphasized that layoffs should not be taken lightly, especially given the surge in layoffs across various sectors and companies since early 2025.

Moreover, the government must maintain consistent economic growth of above 5–6 percent to create 2.5 million new jobs.

Regarding the global issue of trade wars, Bakrie believes it could actually present an opportunity for domestic industry, including job creation.

“It means there will be vast export potential. However, Kadin and the government must ensure that policies truly protect local industries so that more entrepreneurs can survive and succeed,” he added.

As reported, Panasonic Holdings Corporation previously announced plans to lay off up to 10,000 employees worldwide—around 4 percent of its total workforce.

The layoffs are expected to be evenly distributed between domestic and international operations, as part of a comprehensive restructuring initiative aimed at boosting operational efficiency and profitability.

Panasonic also reported a sharp decline in net profit, down 17.5 percent for the fiscal year ending March 2025, amounting to 366 billion yen (approximately IDR 41 trillion), compared to 443 billion yen the previous year.
