Jakarta, VIVA – In an era where climate change demands urgent and strategic responses, sustainable technological innovation has emerged as a cornerstone in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions.
From renewable energy systems and electrified transport to digital monitoring and carbon capture technologies, forward-looking corporations across Southeast Asia are embracing solutions that align profitability with planet-first principles.
One exemplary model is PT Freeport Indonesia, under the leadership of President Director Tony Wenas. The company has implemented numerous initiatives aimed at sustainability, including reducing its carbon footprint through energy efficiency, adopting electric mining equipment, and investing in environmentally responsible operations.
“Communication is not just a tool, but a bridge to build trust, strengthen partnerships, and preserve long-term reputation,” said Tony Wenas in his acceptance speech. His statement reflects a broader leadership ethos centered on values of Safety, Integrity, Commitment, Respect, and Excellence—principles that guide Freeport's operations in balancing business growth with environmental stewardship.
In recognition of his three-decade dedication to responsible leadership, community empowerment, and ethical communication, Tony Wenas was honored with the prestigious ASEAN Lifetime Achievement Award by the ASEAN Public Relations Network (APRN).
The award was presented at the 5th ASEAN Public Relations Excellence Awards 2025, held at the Renaissance Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The event coincided with the Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference (KLIP), a regional forum uniting communication professionals, academics, industry leaders, policymakers, and youth from across Southeast Asia.
Tony Wenas’ leadership has also resulted in significant social impact—more than 40% of PT Freeport Indonesia’s workforce now comes from Indigenous Papuan communities. Through investments in education, healthcare, and environmental innovation, the company has become a benchmark for inclusive and sustainable development.
Prita Kemal Gani, President of the ASEAN PR Excellence Awards and Chair of APRN, praised Wenas’ visionary approach: “Mr. Tony Wenas exemplifies the values we uphold in the ASEAN Public Relations community—ethical leadership, social sustainability, and the ability to shape narratives that drive meaningful change in an increasingly complex world.”
The award also forms part of the ASEAN Malaysian Chairmanship 2025 agenda, themed “Share ASEAN Future 2045: One Identity, One Vision, One Mission.”
