Lillipods Bringing Finnish Model of Learning to Indonesia

Tangerang Selatan, VIVA – Finland’s education system is widely recognized for its balance of academics, life skills, and children’s overall well-being. The model is often praised for putting the needs of the child at the center of learning.
Another key element is the role of highly trained teachers, playful learning methods, and the focus on social and emotional skills. These principles form the foundation that HEI Schools adapts and develops for international contexts.
Building on this foundation, HEI Schools and its long-time partner PT. Kreasi Karya Kasih officially opened a new preschool brand, Lillipods, in Jakarta today. The ceremony was attended by Teemu Laakkonen, Chargé d’Affaires of the Finnish Embassy in Jakarta, Inkeri Aimonen, CEO of HEI Schools, as well as the entire Lillipods Indonesia leadership team.
Lillipods introduces Finland’s renowned play-based learning approach for Indonesian children. Unlike many preschools that emphasize early academics, the program focuses on building strong foundations through play while nurturing social and emotional growth.
Astrid Triandini, Principal of Lillipods Preschool at The Icon BSD, emphasized the school’s adaptation to local culture. “We are not merely importing Finland’s curriculum; we enrich it with Indonesian traditions, including folklore and traditional games,” she explained.
Arthalia Larsen, Co-founder and Academic Advisor, highlighted the philosophy of “Learning with Joy.” “Children here learn math through building blocks, science through gardening, and language through songs and stories—developing both academic readiness and problem-solving confidence,” she said.
The curriculum is organized around six essential areas: language, numeracy, science and environment, arts and culture, physical education, and socio-emotional skills. This structure prepares children not only for formal education but also for lifelong learning.
To support working families, Lillipods combines preschool with flexible after-school care until 6 p.m. “Our modular programs allow parents to adjust schedules without compromising quality, reflecting our mission to provide trusted, accessible early education,” said Teddy Koentjoro, Co-founder of Lillipods.
Inkeri Aimonen, CEO of HEI Schools, stressed the importance of adapting Finland’s model to Indonesia. “We always strive to understand the local context so the Finnish model remains relevant wherever it is applied,” she noted.
She further explained that Finnish education pays close attention to how children learn. “We train Indonesian teachers to use natural methods so learning feels real, connected to daily life, and aligned with children’s interests—while also preparing them for local schools,” Aimonen concluded.
