Malaysia Detects Over 6000 Coronavirus Cases in a Week

Malaysia – The Malaysian Ministry of Health (MCH) detected 6,796 new cases of Covid-19 virus from November 26 to December 2, 2023 (ME 48/2023), an increase from the previous ME of 3,626 cases.

Director General of Health Malaysia, DR Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan said up to ME 48, the Variant of Concern (VOC) detected was 72.9 percent consisting of the Omicron variant, followed by the Delta variant at 26.2 percent, and the remaining Beta and Alpha variants.

"No new variants have been detected in Malaysia, also there's no indication that the variants circulating locally are more infectious or cause more severe disease," Hassan said in a written statement on Tuesday. 

The number of Covid-19 admissions (including suspected Coronavirus patients) to health facilities stands at 3.5 per 100,000 population and 1.0 per 100,000 population with mild symptoms.

As of ME 48/2023, the occupancy rate of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in Malaysia is 0.8 percent, while the percentage of non-critical Covid-19 beds is 1.1 percent. 

Hassan remarked that despite the increase in Covid-19 cases, the overall situation in Malaysia is still under control and does not put a strain on existing healthcare facilities. 

As of Saturday (December 9), the number of active Coronavirus cases reached 20,017 in Malaysia. 

A total of 19,550 people are undergoing quarantine at home, 446 people are in hospitals, eight people are in the ICU, and 13 patients are in the ICU on ventilators.

Meanwhile, on Sunday (December 10), an additional 13,658 Covid-19 cases were recorded, while the day before daily cases reached 6,908. Daily cases had reached 24,157 on Monday (December 12).
