KAI Confirms Exemption of 12 Percent VAT on Train Tickets

Jakarta, VIVA – Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has confirmed that train tickets will not be affected by the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) to 12 percent, which will take effect on January 1, 2025.

The Public Relations Manager of KAI Daop 1 Jakarta, Ixfan Hendriwintoko, stated that the VAT increase is part of the government's effort to ensure subsidies are more targeted and equitable.

"However, for train tickets, the public does not need to worry. Train tickets are not subject to the 12 percent VAT," Hendriwintoko said on Sunday (Dec 29).

To date, KAI emphasized that train travel remains a preferred mode of transportation for the public.

KAI Daop 1 Jakarta reported that it has transported over 588,000 passengers during the 2024-2025 Christmas and New Year holidays, from December 19, 2024, to January 5, 2025.

"As of Saturday, December 28, 2024, KAI Daop 1 Jakarta had already transported 645,895 passengers. This includes 537,191 long-distance train (KAJJ) passengers and 72,704 local train passengers," he explained.

He added that KAI has provided 296,369 seats for this period.

Specifically, 285,234 seats were allocated for long-distance trains and 11,135 seats for local trains.

"The availability of seats is dynamic as ticket sales for the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year period are still ongoing," Hendriwintoko added.

He also emphasized that the company will continue to enhance facilities to ensure passenger comfort.

"KAI continues to improve facilities at stations and on trains to make passengers feel comfortable while waiting at the station and to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and secure journey on board," he concluded.
