Brazil, VIVA – Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono delivered Indonesia's national statement at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday (Apr 28).

The high-level diplomatic gathering addressed key global issues, including political and security developments, global governance reforms, and the role of developing countries in strengthening multilateralism.

During the first session titled “The Role of BRICS in Addressing Global and Regional Crises and Promoting Peace and Security,” Minister Sugiono emphasized the need for BRICS to play a more active and constructive role in promoting peace and upholding global norms.

He highlighted the situation in Gaza as evidence of the global community’s failure to enforce international humanitarian law.

“BRICS must take the lead in defending international law. Its enforcement must be fair, consistent, and without double standards. No one is above the law,” said Minister Sugiono on Wednesday.

He underlined how unilateral actions and violations of international law deepen distrust and global inequality.

“We must safeguard international legal institutions from selective enforcement and political interference,” he stated.

“Rulings and opinions of the International Court of Justice must be respected. The UN Security Council should be empowered to carry out its mandate effectively,” the minister added.

In the second session, themed “Reforming International Institutions for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” Minister Sugiono highlighted the urgency of making multilateralism more inclusive, transparent, trustworthy, and responsive to global challenges.
