Morowali, VIVA – Access to higher education remains a key development challenge in Indonesia, particularly in rural and industrial regions. While secondary school completion is rising, university-level participation remains under 20%, according to 2023 data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS).

Targeted educational programs are essential to close this gap and support local capacity-building. In areas like Morowali, where the mining industry is rapidly growing, scholarships can provide critical pathways for local youth.

Nickel Industries’ scholarship initiative is part of a broader strategy to contribute to national development goals by investing in local human capital. The program is designed not only to improve educational access but also to prepare students for future leadership roles in their communities.

On August 4, 2025, Nickel Industries Limited and Universitas Hasanuddin officially welcomed ten new recipients of the 2025 Nickel Industries Scholarship. The virtual ceremony brought together company executives, university leaders, students and their families, as well as educators from the Bahodopi and Bungku Pesisir subdistricts.

The scholarship covers full undergraduate studies for students accepted into five faculties: Mining Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Informatics, Geology, and Psychology. This reflects the industry's evolving needs for interdisciplinary skills.

“Congratulations to all selected scholars. We are incredibly proud of your accomplishments and deeply encouraged by your enthusiasm as you begin your university journey,” said Justin Werner, Managing Director of Nickel Industries.

Tony Green, Chief Operating Officer of Nickel Industries, emphasised the calibre and determination of the selected students.

“Stay focused and remain determined as you step into what will be a challenging but rewarding academic journey. You’re not alone—support will come from your families, Universitas Hasanuddin, and from us here at Nickel Industries,” said Tony Gren.

The selection process was administered by Universitas Hasanuddin, using a transparent and competitive system involving academic and psychological assessments. The chosen students demonstrated both academic potential and strong personal character.

Vijay Nair, Chief Financial Officer of PT Hengjaya Mineralindo, added his encouragement to the students: “This is only the beginning, and we look forward to seeing you graduate successfully. Let’s make this a truly meaningful journey—again and again.”

This is the second year of the scholarship program, following a successful first cohort in 2024. The continued collaboration highlights a long-term commitment to education and community development.

“Universitas Hasanuddin is committed to supporting them through to graduation, after which we hope they return home to contribute meaningfully to their families, communities, and the nickel industry,” said Muhammad Ruslin, Vice-Rector of Universitas Hasanuddin.
