7,8 Richter Scale Earthquake in Turkey also Shakes Other Countries

VIVA – The huge earthquake 7,8 Richter Scale based in Turkey has destroyed a lot of buildings and killed hundreds of people. This earthquake happens on Monday, Feb. 6, 2023.

Besides Turkey, the quake was also felt in all parts of Israel and forced the residents of Tel Aviv to leave their homes, causing severe damage in several other places.

However, there were no reports of injuries or damage in Israel from the 7.8-magnitude quake, which was centered about 23 kilometers (14 miles) east of Nurdagi, Turkey, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

It was recorded at a depth of 17.9 kilometers and occurred at 4 am in local time. Strong aftershocks of 6.7 and 5.6 on the Richter scale also shook Turkish soil again moments after the initial quake, with reports that they were also felt in Israel.

The quake felt as far away as Cairo and was centered north of the city of Gaziantep in an area about 90 kilometers (60 miles) from the Syrian border. It was recorded at a depth of 17.9 kilometers and struck at 3:17 a.m. in Israel. Strong aftershocks continued to jolt the area hours after the initial quake, some of them felt in Israel as well.

The quake caused shaking in Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Greece, Jordan, Iraq, and as far away as Romania, Georgia, and Egypt, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) said the quake was centered in the town of Pazarcik, in Kahramanmaras province. Several buildings collapsed in Malatya, Diyarbakir, and Malatya provinces, Haber Turk television reported.
