ASEAN, Japan Agree to Build Mutually Beneficial Partnership

Jakarta – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) revealed that ASEAN and Japan have agreed to build a strategic comprehensive mutually beneficial  partnership.

"Japan as one of ASEAN's most active partners and a major supporter of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific can be a key contributor in realizing concrete cooperation that directly benefits the people," the Head of State said in his remarks at the 26th ASEAN-Japan Summit at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Jakarta, on Wednesday.

The Head of State also invited Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to increase contributions in funding infrastructure development in ASEAN, especially in the fields of connectivity and green infrastructure.

"ASEAN needs infrastructure investment of US$184 billion per year. ASEAN hopes that Japan can continue to increase its contribution to the ASEAN Infrastructure Fund and the ASEAN Catalytic Green Finance Facility to support connectivity and green infrastructure," President Joko Widodo continued.

Furthermore, the President also emphasized the importance of ASEAN and Japan to maintain security stability and improve the welfare of people in the region together.

Meanwhile, President mentioned: "As geographically, Japan and the ASEAN are part of Asia. This is our home where we grow and take shelter. So, both the ASEAN and Japan have a huge responsibility to keep the region peaceful, stable, and prosperous,"

Also accompanying the President in the meeting were Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs: Mahfud MD, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture: Muhadjir Effendy, Cabinet Secretary: Pramono Anung, Minister of Foreign Affairs: Retno Marsudi, and Minister of Health: Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
