Bakrie Group Seeks to Become Proxy for Indonesian Energy Transition

Jakarta – President Director and Chief Executive Officer or CEO of Bakrie & Brothers (BNBR) Anindya Novyan Bakrie said that BNBR continues to seek energy transition to have a sustainable business in the future. 

"We believe that when we start from carbon-containing fossil fuels, the only way to do it is energy transition," Anindya Bakrie said as a speaker at the ASEAN-Summit event in Hong Kong, on Monday. 

"So, we hope that our group can be a proxy for energy transition in Indonesia," Bakrie continued. 

According to Bakrie, currently, his party sees many possibilities to make these energy transition efforts. One way that can be done is through the demand side or through the electrification of public transportation such as buses.

"So, we partnered with a company based in Shenzen, which 20 years ago produced batteries for our telecommunications company, but is now a large company called BYD," Bakrie informed. 

Through cooperation with BYD, Anindya Bakrie emphasized that his party is trying to make public transportation an electric vehicle. 

He stated that with ten thousand bus modes owned by TransJakarta, it is an opportunity from the demand side that can be utilized by the Bakrie Group.

"Jakarta now has 10 thousand buses. This is more than in London, and this has a large ratio to the emissions that occur there."

At least with the 52 bus fleet that started last year in the TransJakarta transportation mode, it has been recorded that it has transported more than 15 million people. 

"Even those buses have traveled more than 3 million km, and saved 5,500 tons of CO2 or the equivalent of a quarter of a million tree plantings a year," Bakrie remarked. 

"So, this is quite exciting for us to start with, but we don't want to stop with just distributing with our partners. We also want to build a good manufacturing center in Indonesia, which starts from Magelang," he concluded.
