Dozens Killed as Israeli Airstrikes on Two UN Schools in Gaza

Gaza – Secretary General United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres on Sunday expressed deep concern over Israel's attack on two schools managed by the agency in Gaza in the last 24 hours. 

"I was so surprised that two UNRWA schools were attacked in less than 24 hours in Gaza. Dozens of people, many women and children were killed and injured as they sought safety in the UN building," Guterres stated in a statement. 

"Hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians are seeking refuge in UN facilities across Gaza as fighting intensifies. I reiterate that our places cannot be disturbed," he continued on Monday. 

He further said the conflict is inflicting an astonishing and unacceptable number of civilian casualties, including women and children, which must stop.

Guterres also reiterated calls for a humanitarian ceasefire and commended Qatar for its mediation efforts in the release of hostages held by Hamas, following cross-border attacks into Israel last month.

Israeli airstrikes have killed many Palestinians at Al Fakhoura school in Jabalia refugee camp, and another school in Tall az-Zaatar, also in northern Gaza.

Some people are said to have taken refuge in both schools to escape the incessant Israeli attacks.
