Bekasi, VIVA – Several areas in Bekasi City were hit by severe flooding in the early hours of Tuesday (March 4).

The disaster was triggered by heavy rainfall across the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area from Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The situation worsened due to high water discharge from upstream in Bogor and rising sea tides, which slowed river drainage.

The water level at Katulampa Dam reached alert level two, signaling a significant surge of water flowing toward Bekasi.

The increased discharge in the upper streams of Cibongas River, including Cileungsi and Cikeas Rivers, further exacerbated the flooding—resembling the five-year flood cycle that has previously impacted the area.

Public infrastructure and businesses were heavily affected. A netizen named Mega streamed a live broadcast on TikTok, capturing distressing scenes at the Harapan Baru Slaughterhouse (RPH) on Perjuangan street, North Bekasi.

In the video footage, dozens of cattle were submerged up to their necks, struggling to keep their heads above water.

Meanwhile, an X (formerly Twitter) user, @adorkablejoon, shared videos showing the flooded luxury commercial district of Galaxy, where dozens of cars were submerged up to chest level.

Many vehicles, parked in front of upscale shop houses, were trapped and could not be salvaged due to the extreme water levels.

In response, Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto immediately inspected conditions at the Bekasi Weir (Bendung Bekasi) on Mayor Madmuin Hasibuan street, Margahayu, East Bekasi.

He assured that the government had coordinated with various agencies to prepare for evacuations in the most affected areas.

"Firefighters, Public Order Agency and other local task forces are now on standby to facilitate evacuation efforts," he stated.

Mayor Adhianto also urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow official instructions to ensure their safety.
