Prabowo on US-China Trade War: Indonesia Seeks to Be a Bridge

Ankara, VIVA – Indonesian President, Prabowo Subianto, has spoken out regarding the ongoing import tariff war between the United States and China.
President Prabowo expressed hope that both countries will eventually reach an agreement.
"I hope that, in the end, they will reach a deal. I really hope so," Prabowo told reporters in Antalya, Turkiye, on Friday (Apr 11).
He emphasized that Indonesia does not take sides in the trade war.
The head of state explained that Indonesia maintains good relations with both the United States and China.
"No, no. We respect all nations. We consider China a good friend, and we also see the United States as a good friend. We want to serve as a bridge," he said.
The president also made it clear that Indonesia will not cut ties with China, highlighting the close relationship between the two countries.

"Oh, that’s impossible. China is very close to Indonesia," President Prabowo stated firmly.
Earlier reported, US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause in the implementation of tariffs for more than 75 countries, originally set to take effect on Wednesday (Apr 9).
Trump explained that the suspension was granted because those countries had reached out to US partners to seek solutions on trade-related issues such as trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs.
The US President added that these countries had not taken any retaliatory action against the United States.
He also stated that countries previously subjected to reciprocal tariffs would now face a general tariff of 10 percent.
"I have authorized a 90-day PAUSE and set a much lower reciprocal tariff rate of 10 percent, effective immediately," Trump said.
In fact, he announced even tougher measures against Beijing by imposing significantly higher tariffs.
"Due to China's lack of respect for global markets, I am hereby increasing US tariffs on China to 125 percent, effective immediately," he declared.
