Washington D.C, VIVA – The U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to reopen negotiation channels with the Chinese government, following the latest escalation in the ongoing trade war between the two nations.

Speaking at a press conference broadcast by CNBC International on Tuesday (Apr 15), Trump made the remarks after China imposed a 125% import tariff on American products.

“What’s going on with China? We would very much like to reach a deal,” Trump said during the briefing.

He emphasized that China and several other countries had long benefited unfairly from the U.S., describing the situation as a form of economic exploitation.

“They’ve really taken advantage of our country for a very long time. They’ve cheated us. And I’m talking about many presidents—not just a few. But they did it,” he stressed.

Trump said the high tariffs he implemented during his presidency were aimed at restructuring the domestic economic system and restoring the United States’ bargaining power in global trade.

“All we’re doing is restoring things to how they should be. We’re reorganizing, and I believe we can work together very well,” he explained.

The president also expressed his respect for Chinese President Xi Jinping and optimism about the potential outcome of future negotiations.

“I have great respect for President Xi. He has been a friend of mine for a long time. And I think we will be able to achieve something very good for both countries. I look forward to it,” Trump added.
