He stated that the groundbreaking of this major project in East Halmahera, North Maluku, is scheduled for around the third week of June 2025.

"In June, we’ll start the first groundbreaking for an investment of around US$6–7 billion, for the world’s first fully integrated EV battery ecosystem—from upstream to downstream," the miniater said on Wednesday (June 4).

Minister Lahadalia claimed that the EV battery ecosystem project—from raw material processing to battery cell production—is the first of its kind globally.

He even revealed that several European Union countries have lobbied the Indonesian government, hoping that the EV battery cell factory would be built near their EV manufacturing plants.

"I said, go ahead and build your battery cell factories, but the precursor and cathode production stays in Indonesia. We’ll send them to you. That way, it's a win-win," the minister added.

As for the exact date, minister Lahadalia is targeting the third week of June 2025 for the groundbreaking of the project, which includes a High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) smelter and a battery cell plant.

However, he has yet to provide specific details about the East Halmahera project, including the consortium involved or the official name of the initiative.

"This integrated ecosystem located in one place—starting in June, likely the third week of June—includes the smelter, HPAL, precursor, cathode, and battery cell, all in North Maluku, East Halmahera Regency," he concluded.
