Indonesian Labor Unions Rally for Justice and Job Security on May Day

Jakarta, VIVA – There were a lot of Indonesian workers from various labor unions at the National Monument area  this morning (May 1).

Many wore outfits representing their organizations, while others donned white shirts printed with "May Day 2025" in commemoration of International Workers' Day.

On this occasion, the workers voiced six key demands to President Prabowo Subianto's administration. Here is the list:

1. Abolish Outsourcing

Workers are urging the government to eliminate the outsourcing system, which they argue undermines job security, offers unfair wages, and lacks adequate social protection.

They are calling on President Prabowo to fulfill his promise to abolish this system.

2. Implement Decent Wages

This demand emphasizes the need for a wage system based on the Decent Living Needs (KHL), not merely inflation rates.

Workers are asking that future wage policies consider the needs of workers' families and the rising cost of basic goods.

3. Form a Task Force on Layoffs

Workers are pushing for the creation of a special task force to address the increasing number of layoffs, particularly in the manufacturing and textile sectors.

This task force is expected to resolve labor disputes and prevent repressive actions against workers.

4. Pass the New Labor Law Draft

Workers are demanding the passage of a new Labor Law draft that better protects workers' rights.

5. Pass the Domestic Workers Protection Bill

One of the primary demands is for the government to pass the Domestic Workers Protection Bill to ensure legal protection for domestic workers.

6. Pass the Asset Forfeiture Bill

The last demand is for the government to pass the Asset Forfeiture Bill as part of a broader effort to combat corruption.
