Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong to Resign After Two Decades on Duty

Singapore – Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Monday that he will step down on May 15 after two decades on duty and hand power to his deputy Lawrence Wong.

"I will step down from my role as Prime Minister on May 15, and Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will be sworn in as the next Prime Minister on the same day," Lee said through social media on Monday.

Therefore, he appealed to Singaporeans to continue to provide support to Lawrence after being appointed as Prime Minister.

"I ask all Singaporeans to give their full support to Lawrence and his team, and work with them to create a brighter future for Singapore," he continued.

Wong, who is also Finance minister, was elected as Lee's successor, and is ready to accept the mandate.

"I accept this responsibility with humility and a deep sense of duty. I promise to give my all in this endeavor," Wong wrote via social media.

As information, Singapore's third Prime Minister, Lee led Singapore through several important crises and changes from 2004-2024, including the Covid-19 pandemic.

Besides Prime Minister, Lee also chaired the Economic Review Committee from 2001 to 2003. The committee formulated a new blueprint for Singapore's economy.
