Jokowi: World Bank Recognizes Indonesian Success in Handling Poverty

Jakarta – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) admitted that Indonesia has successfully tackled extreme poverty. This success is also recognized by the World Bank.

In a post on his official Instagram, @jokowi, the President quoted the statement of World Bank Indonesia Country Director Satu Kahkonen, who stated Indonesia's success in reducing extreme poverty by 1.5 percent by 2022. According to him, this is a success in handling extreme poverty.

“According to the Country Director of World Bank Indonesia, Indonesia can be said to have succeeded in handling extreme poverty if the figure reaches 1.5 percent in 2022,” President Jokowi said as quoted from his Instagram account @jokowi, on Sunday (May 19).

The Head of State said that based on data from the World Bank and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the extreme poverty rate in Indonesia will continue to fall until it reaches 1.12 percent in 2023.

“The Government continues to commit and work hard to alleviate poverty and improve the welfare of the people,” the President informed.

As information, the World Bank report entitled 'Indonesia Poverty Assessment' in 2023 noted that from 2002-2023 there has been a significant decline in the poverty rate, from 61 percent to 16 percent.

The World Bank also stated that Indonesia's success in dealing with extreme poverty is inseparable from sustainable economic growth and social protection.

It also said that the consumption trend of the lower class has increased the most during the Jokowi administration, where the highest consumption was around 5.5 percent.
