Indonesia Confident in Supplying Tesla with EV Battery Materials

Jakarta, VIVA – The Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Bahlil Lahadalia, revealed several groundbreaking plans and developments for various projects in the second half of 2024.
In the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, there will be a groundbreaking project for LG Group's cathode factory in the Integrated Industrial Zone (KIT) Batang.
"Groundbreaking in the second half of 2024 from the EV battery ecosystem sector is the cathode, which we will conduct in Batang (with) LG," the minister said on Monday (July 29).
Additionally, Minister Lahadalia highlighted the ongoing construction of a precursor factory by Huayou in North Maluku, which will supply the battery needs for Tesla's electric cars starting in January 2025.

"Then in the second half of 2024, Huayou is building a precursor plant in North Maluku to meet Tesla's demand," the minister remarked.
Thus, Minister Lahadalia confirmed that starting January 1, 2025, Indonesia will be shipping battery material as precursors from a factory in Weda Bay, Central Halmahera, North Maluku.
Regarding LG, the minister said that the construction of the factory in KIT Batang will commence in September.
"Because LG is indeed developing the electric vehicle battery ecosystem in Indonesia. Their investment is spread across several regions such as North Maluku and Karawang," he concluded.
