Indonesia, Peru to Expand Cooperation Beyond Trade into Investment

Jakarta, VIVA – The Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Anindya Bakrie, stated that in addition to the trade sector, Indonesia and Peru will also develop investment cooperation to enable both countries to expand into the Latin American and ASEAN markets.

He made this statement after receiving a visit from the Ambassador of Peru, Luis Tsuboyama, who met Anindya Bakrie at his office.

“We were offering input so that this Indonesia-Peru CEPA can be not only fast but also well-targeted, and can also generate investment in both countries. So it's not just about trade, but also investment,” Bakrie sai on Wednesday (Apr 23).

Bakrie and Ambassador Luis Tsuboyama met following their meeting at Anindya’s office in South Jakarta’s Kuningan area on Wednesday.

Through the IP-CEPA trade cooperation, Bakrie explained that Indonesia and Peru will strengthen their roles in the global supply chain.

Thus, what is produced by either country through investment cooperation is expected to meet the demands of both the Latin American and Southeast Asian markets.

“We want to see all of this as part of the global supply chain. We were looking at where we can play a role. What is produced by Peru, what is produced by Indonesia, is not just for the benefit of both countries but also for their respective regions—Latin America and Southeast Asia,” he stated.

Bakrie then believes that as fellow countries in the Pacific region, Indonesia and Peru have various potentials for collaboration if the IP-CEPA trade agreement is successfully finalized by both countries.

“Well, we know that Peru is in the Pacific, and so are we. So, there’s a lot we can do together, and this CEPA is the starting point,” he added.

Moreover, Bakrie noted that both the Indonesian and Peruvian governments appear equally enthusiastic about working with Kadin Indonesia.

Therefore, Bakrie is optimistic that the inputs Kadin provides to both governments will align with the interests of entrepreneurs in the business sector.

“Especially since both governments seem very eager to engage with Kadin, and of course we will provide our input. But in the end, it is the business sector that will implement it,” he concluded.
