Jakarta, VIVA – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto plans to build a massive Giant Sea Wall (GSW) stretching along the northern coast of Java Island, spanning 500 kilometers from Banten to Gresik.

The investment required for the project is estimated to reach up to US$80 billion, or around IDR 1,300 trillion.

When asked about the project, Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Anindya Bakrie, emphasized that Kadin fully supports the GSW initiative, despite the enormous investment it demands.

According to him, the GSW project—first planned 30 years ago—is crucial to ensure the safety and survival of communities living along Java’s northern coastal region.

“This project has been in the works for 30 years and must be executed to ensure the livelihood of residents in the northern coastal areas of Java,” Bakrie said on Thursday (June 12).

Given the vast investment required, Anindya stressed the importance of collaboration between business actors and both central and local government.

He added that the government must also provide a clear return-on-investment calculation to attract private sector interest.

In addition, he stated that entrepreneurs need legal certainty, and therefore urged the government to enshrine the GSW project in binding regulations.

This is especially important considering that the project is expected to take up to 20 years to complete and will span multiple presidential administrations.

“With cooperation between the central and regional governments, we’ll see how the returns look for any private parties interested. This is a tactical project, particularly with strong political will from both the central and local governments,” he concluded.
