Jakarta, VIVA – The Indonesian government offers an alternative solution to address online loan issues through the People’s Business Credit (KUR) program.
Gede Edy Prasetya, Assistant Deputy for Capital Markets and Financial Institutions at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, stated that according to a World Bank report, the KUR program has successfully reached many repeat borrowers and helped them enter the formal financial sector.
"The World Bank mentions that KUR reaches many repeat borrowers, helping them enter the formal financial sector, and eventually, KUR replaces commercial loans and hopefully, in the future, online loans as well," Prasetya said on Wednesday (Nov 13).

For this reason, Prasetya hopes that KUR can become a financing solution for people who have been trapped in illegal online loans with high interest rates.
"So hopefully, if this can be done well, online loans might also be something we can help resolve," he explained.
He emphasized the importance of effectively developing KUR to offer a safer and more affordable financial solution for the public, which would also reduce the risks of illegal online loans.
In addition to expanding access to KUR, the government is also committed to strengthening regulation and oversight of this program.
This is being done to ensure that KUR provides maximum benefits to the public and protects consumers from potential misuse or fraud in credit distribution.
As for the level of non-performing loans (NPL) for KUR, it currently stands at 2.19 percent.
He denied claims that the NPL for KUR had reached 5 percent.
"Our current NPL is 2.19 percent. So there was an issue that claimed it was 5 percent, which is not true. According to our records or statistical data, the figure is 2.19 percent," Prasetya remarked.
He added that this relatively low NPL rate indicates that the KUR program is well-managed and has a controlled level of risk.
